Why bother with this particular fanlisting? I admit Courtney Love isn't exactly a role model; she was an ex-stripper and a rumored druggie. But her personal life doesn't really taint her music. I find her to be beautifully raw, in a way; she can be both glamorous in her grunginess. So I've taken interest in her band Hole shortly after the release of the single "Celebrity Skin," which, along with "Malibu," is one of my favorite songs ever. :)
While its tune is easy to like, my favorite aspect of the song is actually its echoing of some motif of concerns and selflessness. It's not quite the usual first-person lyric; the speaker actually addresses someone else. There is a redemptive and sympathetic tone to the whole theme -- an empathy over a love that breaks the soul, the necessity to recuperate and regenerate wholeness, and a genuine concern for the well-being of someone else. I suppose one can construe this theme as actually a third-person monologue to the Self, but it really can be interpreted as comforting sentiments coming from a person looking out for a friend who's been destroyed by love.
I actually played around with the lyrics to come up with the title of the fanlisting: FLY TO THE ANGELS. I deliberately shortened and mixed up the lines "Fly away to Malibu" and "Cry to the angels" because I feel that this is what captures the essence of the song. That though the self be broken and need to go away and reconstruct himself, the angels will catch him when he falls, and lift him up -- and the speaker will be here for him when he does. Interstingly enough, the last few lines "I can't be near you / the light just radiates" actually seem to equate the addressee to an angel himself. ;)
